A number of flats had to be evacuated in the early hours of this morning following a fire.

Residents were woken up at around 2am after a bin store was set alight in the city centre.

As Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service worked to put out the fire, police arrested a 17-year-old girl on suspicion of arson.

Detective Sergeant Nick Wood of Nottinghamshire Police is leading the investigation to determine the cause.

He said: "This would have been a terrifying incident for those involved and required a joint response from emergency services.

“It would have been incredibly concerning for the local community but the fire caused minimal damage and no one was injured.

"Residents were woken up at around 2am this morning in Lister Gate after hearing a loud bang, before the fire alarm sounded and smoke filled the air.

"Thankfully the fire was quickly contained after emergency services swiftly responded to this incident.

“Fires close to people's homes can have devastating consequences which is why we treat incidents like this with such seriousness.”
