Police Performance Scrutinised for Sustainability
Posted on 28th January 2010
Members of Nottinghamshire Police Authority's Performance Committee closely questioned senior officers of Nottinghamshire Police to establish whether the recent improvements reported in performance could be sustained.
A report presented to the Committee showed that in the nine months ending December 31st 2009, there were 12,008 less offences committed in Nottinghamshire compared to the same period in 2008. This represents a fall in all crime of 13.6%.
Noting that Nottinghamshire is currently in its seventh year of falling crime figures members were, however, disappointed to see that there remains a gap in performance between Nottinghamshire and its most similar forces. Members were pleased to hear that performance in December had seen significant improvements but asked if these were sustainable over the months and years to come.
Alan Street, Chair of the Performance Committee said: "While there are some encouraging signs, particularly when we look at the reductions in key crimes that concern the public most, we are all keen to see these improvements continue month on month and that is not an easy task. The current Capability Review is intended to highlight areas where we can speed up the improvement process, so we look forward to seeing the recommendations that will arise from this expert examination of the way in which both the Force and Authority operate.
"We also want to see the number of crimes brought to justice increased. People expect criminals to receive some type of sanction for their actions and so do we.
"Therefore we will be working closely with all our partners, including the local crime and disorder partnerships and the Local Criminal Justice Board to see where we can all make a contribution to the improvement process."
Nottinghamshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Peter Davies added: "Crime is falling in Nottinghamshire for the seventh consecutive year. The figures that we have just announced show that there are over 12,000 fewer victims in the county since April 2009, which is encouraging. As a Force we have also achieved some notable successes, including the successful conclusion of the Colette Aram investigation and the policing of the demonstrations in Nottingham City Centre in early December, while our record in major crime and homicide is exceptional. However, we want to see an acceleration of the recent improvements in other areas so that we can bridge the gap between performance in Nottinghamshire and other similar areas."
