DECADE IN THE CHAIR AT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE AUTHORITY
Cllr John Clarke has been elected Chair of Nottinghamshire Police Authority for the tenth successive year at the Annual General Meeting, held today.
After the meeting Cllr Clarke thanked his colleagues and said: "I'm absolutely delighted and am looking forward to the next year, but I know there will be some big challenges, not least the tightening financial position facing everyone. One of my key priorities is to continue my work to improve the funding for policing in Nottinghamshire to ensure further improvements to police performance.
"I am also determined to see Neighbourhood Policing delivered effectively to every corner of the county which, alongside meeting the standards set down by the Policing Pledge, is vitally important to the quality of life and feelings of safety in communities.
"The number of crimes committed in Nottinghamshire has been declining year on year for the past six years and, with our partners, work will continue to secure further reductions."
Deputy Chief Constable Howard Robert added: "As Chief Officers we look forward to working closely with the Chair, the new Vice-Chair and the whole Authority in the coming year. We are fortunate in Nottinghamshire to have an Authority that is both challenging and supportive, and most clearly works in the interests of the people of Nottinghamshire.
"Together with the Authority we are all working hard to improve policing in the County."
Independent Member, Kam Gill, of Sherwood, Notts, was elected Vice-Chair for the first time. A member of the Authority since 2007, Ms Gill has an extensive knowledge of welfare rights and advocacy issues through her work in the voluntary and statutory sectors, coupled with a background in Social Policy and Criminology.
She said: "I'm honoured and delighted to be elected to this position and will do my very best to deliver an excellent service. I look forward to working closely with John and the rest of the team on the Authority.
"I'm keen to see the Authority engaging more with the whole community, particularly young people, those from BME communities and people living in rural communities. I think it is important that everyone has the opportunity to get involved and help influence the way policing is delivered."
