Home users and small businesses can take the following steps to protect themselves online:

- Run Windows Update

- Make sure your antivirus product is up-to-date and run a scan — if you don’t have one why not install a free trial version from a reputable vendor

- If you do not do so already, this is a good time to think about backing up important data. We recommend that you don’t store back-ups on the same computer, or any other device within your home network. Home users should consider using cloud services to back-up their important files. Many service providers (such as email providers) offer a small amount of cloud storage space for free.

If you think your computer or device has been infected please report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

101 is the number to call when you need to contact Nottinghamshire Police and it’s less urgent than a 999 call. Calls cost 15p, no matter how long the call lasts.
